How to Identify the Right Torsion Spring for Your Garage Door

Choosing the correct torsion spring isn’t just about fit—it’s about performance, safety, and extending the life of your garage door system. Here’s how to identify the right one for your setup.

1. Measure the Wire Size

Count 20 coils and measure the length in inches. Then use a wire size chart to find the correct gauge. For example, 20 coils that measure 5 inches = a 0.250 wire size.

2. Determine the Inside Diameter (ID)

Most residential springs are either 1.75” or 2” in ID. This measurement is often stamped on the stationary cone or listed in the original product documentation.

3. Measure the Spring Length

Measure the spring in a relaxed state—not stretched or compressed. Round to the nearest ¼ inch.

4. Use the Color Code

Springs are color-coded on the winding cone to indicate wind direction (Red = Right wind, Black = Left wind). For double spring setups, left wind goes on the right side of the door, and vice versa.

Tip: Always replace both springs at the same time to avoid uneven tension and premature failure.
