Installing Torsion Springs Safely: What You Need to Know

Torsion spring installation is not your average DIY project. The springs are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury if handled incorrectly. Here's what to know before you grab the wrench.

1. Safety First

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves

  • Unplug the garage door opener

  • Use proper winding bars (never screwdrivers!)

2. Tools You'll Need

  • Winding bars (18” preferred)

  • Vice grips or locking pliers

  • Wrenches (usually 7/16” or ½”)

  • Tape measure

  • Marker

3. Basic Installation Steps

  • Lock the door in place

  • Unwind the old springs

  • Remove the torsion bar

  • Install the new springs

  • Rewind the new springs with exact turns (based on door height)

Warning: Even experienced DIYers can make mistakes. If you're not confident, always hire a professional installer.

RTS Tip:

All RTS springs come with cones pre-installed and clearly stenciled to help simplify identification and installation.
